AVID is an elective class for students in grades 6-12 at three GBAPS schools – Washington Middle School and East and West High Schools. Students are carefully selected for the program. Targeted students are those who would be first generation college students, are from low income families or from historically underserved populations (Hispanic, Black, Asian, American Indian…), have average to high test scores, and have GPAs between 2.0 and 3.5.
The AVID class meets daily and uses an established curriculum. It includes:
- Rigorous standards,
- WIC-R (writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading) strategies,
- Cornell note-taking,
- Study skills,
- Tutorials led by trained college tutors on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
- Socratic Seminars, and
- The creation of a network of support made up of parents, teachers, and AVID classmates all focused on the goal of preparing students for college.
