Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program

Mission Statement

The mission of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program (DHH) is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and young adults, primarily through a professionally supported, school environment, and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow. We strive to help all students become confident, educated, self-advocating and caring individuals who are college, career and community ready.  

The Green Bay Area Public Schools Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program has been educating students with hearing loss for many decades now. We serve students ranging in age from Early Childhood through age 21 offering itinerant services within a child’s home school, as well as program based services for students with more significant needs. The abundant service our specialists in Green Bay provide is top-notch and focused on student success in the real world.


District DHH Services

  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) instructed Early Childhood Program. 

  • In-house audiology, speech and language services and educational interpreters.

  • DHH pull-out direct instruction and mainstream support.

  • iSign Club offered to all students at Lombardi Middle School and Southwest High School.

  • Deaf Club at Southwest High School that focuses on DHH social networking and support.

  • College scholarship opportunities for DHH students.

  • Yearly District wide field trips for our DHH students for confidence building and to support their social/emotional well being.

  • Opportunities for socializing with other DHH peers within our program schools.

  • Deaf adult role models are brought in to foster social/emotional development.

  • K-12 Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program Based Services tracked through Langlade Elementary, Lombardi Middle and Southwest High Schools.

  • Itinerant based services district wide for students attending their home school.

Deaf/Hard of Hearing Special Education Services are determined on an individual basis.  We offer a morning and afternoon Early Childhood Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program at Langlade Elementary School.  We also offer Deaf/Hard of Hearing Programming for Kindergarten through 5th grade at Langlade.  Programming continues in 6th through 8th grade at Lombardi Middle School, and 9th through 12th grade at Southwest High School.  Itinerant Deaf/Hard of Hearing Special Education Services are also determined on an individual basis and are available at neighborhood schools within the Green Bay Area Public School District.

Role of the Educational Audiologist

  • Interpret audiological information and manage educational impact of hearing loss 
  • Monitor and manage personal and classroom amplification
  • Provide classroom acoustic modifications
  • Evaluate educational impact of hearing loss to determine appropriate supports and services
  • Serve as a member of the IEP team
  • In-service and support teachers and other service providers who work with students with hearing loss and their amplification
  • Collaborate with community resources (clinical audiologists, medical professionals, community programs, etc) to promote programs and services to support children with hearing loss and their families

Role of the Teacher

  • Program Teachers often provide frequent direct instruction to DHH students in all or some subject areas
  • Itinerant teachers provide less frequent direct push-in or pull-out instruction to DHH students in some subject areas within their home schools
  • Consult with general education teachers and administrators
  • In-service and support teachers and other service providers who work with students with hearing loss
  • Serve as an advocate for students within their schools to ensure their hearing loss related needs are being addressed
  • Monitor auditory training and use of auditory equipment
  • Monitor language development of students with hearing loss
  • Consult with Educational Audiologist regarding current audiological information
  • Consult with IEP teams regarding needed specialized services, goals and/or classroom accommodations
  • Instruct students in self advocacy skills
  • Consult with families regarding child’s educational needs, home activities and other community supports
  • Serve as an IEP team member
