What is the Special Education Council (SEC)?
The Council is a representation of parents, community members and GBAPS employees who review current issues/trends and promotes family engagement. The group focuses on disseminating information, identifying needs, networking with families. The group would like to be a resource for families within the school district.

Who are the students receiving special education services?
They are students who have been diagnosed with one or more of the following conditions:
Autism Orthopedic impairment
Other health impairment Deaf-blindness
Developmental delay Emotional disability
Hearing impairment Traumatic brain injury
Intellectual disability Visual impairment
Multiple disabilities Specific learning disability
Speech/language impairment
Who serves on the committee?
Applicants have been recommended by school board members, administrators, and school staff. We will have 15 participants on the council. The first members were selected by district staff that support Special Education. Each member serves on the council for two years (2019-2021). This committee meets one evening per month. Along with parents, Special Education and Pupil Services representatives and outside agency representatives will be present.
Who may attend Special Education Council Meetings?
All meetings are open to the public. The council welcomes anyone interested in special education. There is designated time for public comment during the meeting. This is an opportunity to share successful educational experiences and express general concerns regarding educational issues for students with disabilities.
What are the functions of the Special Education Council?
● Participate in the development of priorities and strategies for meeting the identified needs of children with disabilities.
● Advise the local school district of needs in the education of children with disabilities.
