Krysten CapwellFor Preble High School senior Krysten Capwell, interest in the medical field is in her DNA. Her grandmother was a military nurse, and her parents are nuclear medicine technologists. Krysten’s dream is to become a nurse anesthetist, and at only 17 years old, she is well on her way to achieving that goal.

During her high school career, Krysten pursued every opportunity available to gain experience in the medical field. She took a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) the summer before her junior year, which put her career plan into motion.

Krysten currently works at Aurora BayCare Medical Center as a CNA in the medical surgical unit through the Greater Green Bay Chamber’s Youth Apprenticeship program. She enjoys her job as a CNA, and feels it will properly prepare her for her future. “I like seeing a variety of patients with varying needs,” said Krysten. “I enjoy taking care of patients after surgery and know this experience will expand my knowledge for my future career path.”

After graduation, Krysten will attend NWTC to earn her nursing degree and continue to work as a CNA. Aurora has a tuition reimbursement program, which will enable Krysten to have a portion of her education paid for while she’s working and attending school.

While in high school, Krysten has taken many college and dual credit classes. When she officially starts at NWTC next year, she will enter her postsecondary education with 36 college credits. “The fact that I will be able to earn my nursing degree one year early will allow me to get a leg-up in the job market, and save money,” said Krysten. “This achievement really gives me a sense of accomplishment and I think it will show future employers that I am responsible.”

Krysten credits her parents, her school counselors from Preble High School and the opportunities offered by the Green Bay Area Public School District as aiding in her success. “The amount of opportunities provided by the District is very unique,” said Krysten. “I don’t think I would have had the same pathways and options in a smaller school district.”
