Multi Factor Authentication for Students

The District uses Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) to help keep accounts secure. MFA requires a password and one additional action to access a user's Google accounts.

MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring two or more verification steps to access an account. In addition to a password, students will need to provide a second form of verification, such as:

  • A code sent to either the student cell phone or family member’s cell phone via text message. This should be a cell phone students have access to when logging into their computer.
  • A code generated by an authentication app on a smartphone or tablet.

Prior to the 2026-27 school year, MFA will be optional for students in grades 9-12. However, it will be required for the 2026-27 school year for students in grades 9-12. Students must set-up MFA while on campus to access their accounts off-campus.

Configuring Multi Factor Authentication Using the Preferred Method

MFA setup requires two verification methods. The Green Bay Area Public School District requires using a password for method one and recommends the Microsoft Authenticator App (iOS | Android) for method two. It is recommended that you have at least one alternate method such as a text message or a phone call. The backup method will help ensure you maintain access to your account.

1. On a computer, visit the Microsoft sign-in page and enter your GBAPS email address.

Choose Yes to reduce the number of times you need to sign in.

A Microsoft sign-in page displays a student email address in the foreground, with %22Back%22 and %22Next%22 buttons below, against a plain white background.

2. On the Security Info tab review the methods you have listed. Click on Add sign-in method.

A computer screen displays a %22Security info%22 page for the Green Bay Area Public School District, with a highlighted %22Add sign-in method%22 button in the foreground and navigation options on the left.

3. Choose your preferred MFA method.

It is suggested that you first set up MFA using the Authenticator App then add a phone number as a back up option.

Note: Email is not a supported method.

A white screen displays options for adding sign-in methods, including passkeys, security keys, and phone calls, against a plain white background.

Questions regarding MFA or how to set up MFA can be directed to the Department of Technology. Email the Help Desk (preferred) or call 920-448-2148.

If your phone is set to offload unused apps beware you may need to reinstall the Microsoft Authenticator App next time you need to authenticate. This may cause you to experience some delays in using the app since you’ll have to download it from the app store.
