
Clear Backpack FAQ
The Green Bay Area Public School District is receiving an outpouring of support to provide clear backpacks for families. Once the details have been worked out, schools will be communicating with families.

- When is the clear backpack safety protocol in effect?
- Are there size specifications for the clear backpacks?
- Do lunchboxes/lunch bags need to be clear?
- Are mesh backpacks allowed?
- Is it ok if my backpack is frosted or translucent vs. transparent?
- Will backpacks with padded backs be accepted?
- Is there a limit to the amount of pockets?
- Are name tags allowed (for differentiation)?
- Are leather reinforcements in the corners permitted?
- Are transparent colored backpacks allowed?
- Are colored straps allowed?
- Can the clear backpacks have a zipper with color?
- Can students place stickers or bedazzle their backpacks?
- Can we use markers or paint on clear backpacks?
- Can students add keychains and pins to the straps?
- Are company or trademark logos allowed on the front of the backpack?
- Can there be a see-through piece of fabric to separate the computer from the main compartment?
- Are clear totes, clear purses, and transparent plastic bags allowed?
- Does a pencil case need to be clear or can students use a regular pencil case?
- Does a pencil case/pouch need to be in a clear pencil case/bag?
- What about privacy?
- What about students that must carry medical items/equipment to school?
- Can students have both a non-transparent pencil case AND a small personal pouch for hygiene items?
- Can the schools provide hygiene products to have in bathrooms for the girls?
- What about gym bags/athletic bags/music instrument cases?
- If students come to school with a backpack, will they be given something to use for the day to carry materials?
- If backpacks are clear, phone can now be seen. How will this work?
- Will the zipper trapper keepers be allowed?
- Are purses allowed in addition to the clear backpack?
- Now that clear backpacks are required, can middle school students now carry their backpacks to class vs. leaving in their locker?
- Can students carry trapper keepers instead of backpacks?
- Does the clear backpack requirement apply to K-8s? If yes, is it required for lower grades.
- Will clothing be prohibited from being inside the clear backpacks?
- Will you be adjusting schedules for high school students to be able to use their locker for storage?
- With clear backpacks, there is no 'protective' sleeve for chromebooks. If they are damaged through no fault of the kids will parents be responsible for those damages or what will be the policy regarding that?
- If we don’t have a clear bag, will it just be searched and we’ll be let on our way?
- What if a parent refuses to comply due to various reasons and is fine with their child's backpack being checked everyday?
- Will students get in trouble for not wearing clear backpacks?
- Are parents required or encouraged to check their children's backpacks at home before school?
- How will the school prevent items from being stolen now that they will be on display for everyone to see? For example, AirPods, Phones, and personal computers.
- What about the students who steal from other students? How are we going to prevent that?
