D/HH Group Celebrates Fall

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students and staff at Langlade Elementary School celebrated fall and diversity with a recent pumpkin decorating project.

In October, D/HH students and staff met and read the book “Pumpkin Heads: by Wendell Minor. Students learned that pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes.

Each D/HH student got a pumpkin to decorate with stickers and auditory equipment like hearing aids and cochlear implants. Students had the choice to decorate pumpkins with the equipment they wear.

Once a month, the D/HH staff and students get together for Deaf Group.

“The kids are always excited to meet their Deaf and Hard of Hearing friends,” D/HH teacher Amy Curran said. “It is a perfect time for the children to socialize with each other, learn, and communicate with their small D/HH community.”

Deaf Group typically involves a short lesson, a video, or a project. The students do the activity and spend time together.

“Deaf Group provides a positive learning environment for the students to embrace their diversity, celebrate their deafness, and share themselves with others that are similar to themselves,” Curran said.
