East High Students Volunteer for BBBS
April 20 - 26, 2025, is Volunteer Appreciation Week and the Green Bay Area Public School District is grateful for all the volunteers we see in our school communities.
Students at East High School have continued a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Sullivan Elementary School. Several East High School students volunteer each year to be “Bigs” for students at Sullivan Elementary. Here are a few of the student volunteers and their “Littles.”
Estefanie & Mariam
This is the first year that Estefanie & Mariam have been in BBBS.
"Being a big sister allows me to build a connection with someone who is curious about life and who enjoys spending time having fun with me,” Estefanie said. “It feels great to know you are someone who is worth spending time with and that your presence is something they look forward to."
Mariam said she loves her big sister because Estefanie is funny.
Lydia & Brooklynn
Lydia and Brooklynn have been matched for two years.
"I love working with my little sister because she teaches me new things every week,” Lydia said. “She keeps me updated on her life and loves to share her story, talk about things she enjoys. I also love meeting my little sister because she can be a challenge just like my little sister at home and through the challenge and struggle we come across sometimes it helps me work on my patience and persevere through tough times."
"I like my Big Sister because she teaches me how to play games. I want her to be my Big Sister forever because she's so nice and helps me a lot when I'm feeling angry,” Brooklynn said.
Avyona & Mytisean
Avyona and Mytisean have been part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program for two years.
"I like BBBS because it lets me have a sibling I never had,” Avyona said. “Being the youngest, having someone to be a leader towards feels pretty awesome."
"My Big Sister is the coolest because she plays games with me which always makes me feel so happy,” Mytisean said.
Taniyah & Layia
Taniyah and Layia have been meeting for two years.
"I like working with my little one because for one she is very funny to talk to, very smart and well behaved,” Taniyah said. “I love being her older sister and giving her advice about school or anything like that."
"I think having a big sister is cool and everyone should have one like mine because she is awesome, and fun, and so nice too!" Layia said.
Guadalupe & Valeria
This is Guadalupe and Valeria's first year meeting.
“I like to play games like Jenga with her. I also like having a "sister" that I can talk to alone, like a friend,”Valeria said.
Green Bay Area Public School District is proud to share that in the past year, volunteers have logged more than 30,000 hours. The current estimated national value of each volunteer hour is $33.49, meaning that GBAPS volunteers have donated more than $1 million worth of their time.
Thank you to all our volunteers making a difference in the lives of our more than 18,500 students.
