West High alumna shared memories on recent tour
On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, West High School hosted several very special guests: West High alumna Barbara (Dauplaise) Jenkins (Class of ‘53), her daughter, Anne Bern, and her nephew, Mike Dauplaise (Preble Class of ‘80). Barbara is the daughter of West High School principal George Dauplaise, who served from 1946-1970.
Board President Laura McCoy, Interim Superintendent Vicki Bayer, and Principal Dexter McNabb walked around West High School with the family, enjoying their memories of West High School.
Barbara was 11 when her father became principal of West High School. The Green Bay Press-Gazette covered the family's move in October of 1946, because at the time Principal Dauplaise and his family were having difficulties finding housing. The family slept in the girls locker room and made their meals in the home economics department. After 10 days, the family eventually found housing on the east side of Green Bay (formerly known as Preble).
While West High School has undergone many changes since that time, much of the school Barbara remembered from both her time living at West and when she was a student at West.
Some interesting facts shared included:
- The current Career Center used to house Principal Dauplaise's office.
- The Thune Center is named after a good friend of Principal Dauplaise.
- Franklin Junior High and West High School were both located at that site.
