School Psychologists

School psychologists focus on creating positive learning environments for all students so they are not only college, career, and community ready, but also have strong social-emotional skills to deal with everyday situations. School psychologists partner with families and the community to work together to meet the changing needs of students. They promote diversity and establish best practices to remove barriers for students.

Services

To best support the needs of all students, school psychologists play a unique role in GBAPS as either a building level school psychologist or a school psychologist-evaluation specialist. School psychologists possess a wide range of skills, and this model allows them to specialize and to develop an expertise in a specific area. Both roles are highly valued and collaboration between the teams is essential. However, this model allows school psychologists to have the time and tools to reflect on students’ needs and to provide support at a more comprehensive level.

Building Level School Psychologist The building level school psychologists work closely with school staff and administration, as well as the special education department, to create positive outcomes for students with disabilities and students who are at-risk. They consult and collaborate with school teams on how to establish school-wide behavioral and academic systems with an emphasis on the intensive level of need (Tier 3). Building level school psychologists promote best practices, such as conducting functional behavioral assessments, utilizing research and evidence-based interventions, and using data-based decision making to inform school practices. They work with school teams on monitoring student progress and using individualized instruction and intervention based on students’ needs.

Another significant role of the building level school psychologist is providing social-emotional and behavioral supports to students in the schools. They may  facilitate individual and group counseling which reinforce coping skills and resilience, and promote problem solving, conflict resolution, empathy, character education, anger management, emotional regulation and positive peer relations. In addition, they are able to design social-emotional interventions for students to help them navigate their school environment. School psychologists also work with special education teachers to complete reevaluations for students receiving special education services, if a reevaluation is needed.

Evaluation Specialist School Psychologist

Another unique role in GBAPS is the school psychologist-evaluation specialist position. This role is so much more than conducting evaluations. This team of school psychologists work closely together to build systems to ensure appropriate and culturally sensitive evaluations are being conducted District-wide. As these school psychologists specialize in assessment, it allows them the opportunity to complete a more thorough evaluation and to dig deeper into the root causes which supports the appropriate identification of students with disabilities. Also, they work together on teams with other school professionals, including program support teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech language pathologists.
