About the Project

Safe Walk & Bike Green Bay is a joint effort of the Green Bay Area Public School District and the City of Green Bay. The purpose of the plan, which should be completed by July of 2019, is to identify ways to empower adults and children of all ability levels throughout the Green Bay area to make walking and biking a part of their daily routines in getting to schools and other community destinations in an equitable way.

The project started in December of 2015, when a number of GBAPS employees came together to request funding to complete a Safe Routes to School planning grant. In August of 2016, we received funding approval. After funding was approved, Jen Van Den Elzen, then director of Live54218, suggested a collaboration between the district and City of Green Bay to expand the scope of the project.

Shortly thereafter, the city and the district came together to ensure that the project not only include schools, but the city of Green Bay, as well. In January of 2018, TooleDesignGroup was selected to be the lead consultant in partnership with their sub-consultant, We Bike Etc., LLC, from Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin.

About You - You Are Needed!
Public input is an important part of this Safe Walk & Bike plan. For this reason, there are a number of opportunities for public input throughout the project. The first in-person opportunity for public input was at the Open Streets Green Bay event on July 14th. The turnout and input we received was amazing, with over 70 citizens stopping to give us their opinions. Another opportunity for input was on May 14th at 5:30 p.m. at the lower level of the Brown County Public Library.

Project Updates
It is also a goal of the project team to foster a spirit of collaboration and openness throughout. For this reason, we will be offering public access to the project schedule, project updates and meeting minutes.
