Creative Solutions for Virtual Learning Success

GBAPS Teachers Find Creative Solutions for Virtual Learning Success
Posted on 10/29/2020
Student virtual learningGreen Bay Area Public School District (GBAPS) staff have been working hard to find innovative and creative solutions to improve the virtual learning environment and create successful outcomes for students. English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers at Nicolet and Eisenhower elementary schools teamed up to write grants for materials to support ESL students’ virtual learning.

Headphones Grant

Learning in an off-site/virtual environment requires students to log-in and attend meetings online, and participate in discussion groups from their homes. Many students come from large families, with several siblings attempting to participate in virtual learning at the same time. Teachers noticed that students were struggling to be heard while participating. Their voices were getting drowned out by family members talking, pet noises, a television or radio, and other normal household noises. To solve this issue, donations were solicited through Donors Choose to purchase headphones with microphones for students to learn virtually from home. After the grant was successfully funded, 38 headphones were purchased for students at Nicolet, and 61 for Eisenhower students.

Organizational Supplies Grant

Virtual learning can be challenging for everyone, but when students do not have the resources to be organized, it can be especially hard. Nicolet teachers felt it would be beneficial to provide students and families with the appropriate supplies they need to learn from home, and ways to keep their school materials organized. To properly teach students organizational skills and provide them with supplies, donations were solicited through Donors Choose to purchase organizational totes, dry erase boards, markers, felt tip pens, folders to store writing paper appropriate for each grade level, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners.

“We are so grateful to our caring staff for the creative ideas and solutions they have implemented to create a more positive virtual learning environment for our students,” said Toni Lucia, Coordinator of English Language Learner Programs for Green Bay Area Public Schools.
