The primary focus of the Washington Middle School for the Arts is to provide students with an integrated fine arts education in 6th grade, and opportunities to explore pathways in the fine arts in grades 7 and 8.

The concept of developing and implementing a district-wide Fine Arts Institute began in 2010 by establishing the Fine Arts Institute at East High School in the fall of 2011, and Webster Elementary Children’s Center for Integrated Arts in 2013. It is with great excitement that the next phase is in the works! With unanimous approval by the Board of Education on January 15, 2018, Green Bay Area Public Schools (GBAPS) will welcome incoming sixth graders to the Washington Middle School of the Arts for the fall of 2018-19.

The primary focus of the Washington Middle School of the Arts is to provide students the next step in a pathway to actively participate in a fine arts focused program, expanding opportunities initiated in elementary school and continuing through middle and high school. Starting in the 6th grade, 75 students will have the opportunity to be enrolled in a Washington Middle School of the Arts “house” that will provide students a fine arts focused educational experience. The students will be immersed in fine arts exploration through courses including Art Foundations, Intro to Theatre/Literary Arts Workshop, World Drumming, and Popular Music Workshop.

The Washington Middle School of the Arts will follow the rigorous GBAPS curriculum and will continue to weave the fine arts focus throughout core curriculum areas, infusing special value-added events and partnerships in the Fine Arts house. Business, industry, post secondary institutions and community-based organizations will work collaboratively with the Fine Arts Institute at Washington Middle School.
